1月のインターナショナル・プリスクールCHESのTopicは、「交通と建物」だったので、Topicの総仕上げに、Blockを使って実際に動く車をつくって動かしてみることにしました。

Blockの動きはプログラムできるので、様々なBlockを組み合わせながら、どのような動きになるのかを試してみたのです。

プログラムは英語ととても相性がいいので、アフター・クラスの卒園生クラスでは、2月から実験的に取り入れていくことにしました。みんなで作ると、作業を助けてもらったり、助けたりしながら、ワイワイと楽しいので、5グループに分かれて車を組み立てることに。

うまく障害物を避けどれだけ早くゴールできるか、プログラムの入力を工夫して、グループごとにタイム・レースすることを目指します。

プリ・クラスの園児たちには、まだ学齢的に少し早いので、今回はMr. Seanがプログラムを入力して、どのような動きになるのかをみんなで話し合いながら動かしてみました。

Hello everyone!

The last few days of January were spent wrapping up our lessons on transportation. We had already learned so many types of vehicles that we could recite many in our circle time and remember them.

We focused more on rules and safety, as well as thinking about the future. We could get creative with our own methods of transportation!

Additionally, we began to wrap up our trains, another kind of vehicle we made that can actual move. Getting moving wheels is tricky, but we used thick and thin straws to make a kind of axle. Little by little, our train was coming together!

1月の最後の数日間は、交通手段に関するレッスンの仕上げに費やしました。私たちはすでに多くの種類の乗り物を学んでいたので、サークルタイムで多くの乗り物を覚えることができました。

ルールと安全性、そして将来について考えることに重点を置きました。自分たちで工夫して交通手段を考えることができるようになりました。

さらに、実際に動く乗り物として、汽車の製作に取りかかりました。車輪を動かすのは難しいのですが、太いストローと細いストローを使って車軸のようなものを作りました。少しずつですが、私たちの列車が出来上がってきましたよ。

Next, our goal was to create something new and creative after learning about electric power and other types of engine. How could we imagine transportation that uses different methods of moving?

We first had worksheets that envisioned our future vehicles, which we pasted into our scrapbooks. There were many exciting ideas, like combining solar power and electricity to power our transportation, as well as more unique ones, like vehicles that can travel on land, water, and air!

Secondly, we decided to try our hand at building something ourselves! Using Artec blocks, we put together a simple car. We saw how attaching the axles to the motor let the wheels spin, but only when the batteries were inside. This reminded us about how we discussed electric power from earlier. Now we could see it in action.

次に目指したのは、電気や他のエンジンの種類を学んだ上で、何か新しい創造をすることです。さまざまな移動手段を使った交通手段をどのように想像したらよいのでしょうか。

まず、未来の乗り物をイメージしたワークシートを用意し、それをスクラップブックに貼り付けました。太陽光発電と電気を組み合わせたもの、陸・水・空を移動できるものなど、ユニークなアイデアもたくさんありました。

次に、自分たちで何かを作ってみようということになりました。アーテックブロックを使って、簡単な車を作りました。モーターに車軸を取り付けると、電池が入っているときだけ車輪が回ることを確認しました。以前、電気の話をしたことを思い出しました。今、私たちはそれを実際に見ることができました。

Together with everyone, we followed the instructions on the manual, arranged the pieces, and attached them to each other. In no time at all, we had a working, moving car!

Following that, we thought about what changes we could make. This was our car, so we could change it any way we wanted to see how its movement would change. Would it work or not? We considered the ideas.

“How can it turn left or right?” The first question was a good one! We tried making the wheels further apart on one side, but that didn’t work. Then we made one wheel bigger than the other, and it DID work!

みんなと一緒に、説明書に従って、パーツを並べたり、くっつけたりしました。あっという間に、動くクルマが完成しました。

続いて、自分たちでどんな工夫ができるかを考えました。自分たちのクルマだから、どんな風に変えてもいいし、どんな風に動きが変わるのか。動くのか、動かないのか。ということを考えました。

「どうやったら、右や左に曲がるんだろう？」。最初の疑問は正解でした。片側の車輪の間隔を広げてみましたが、うまくいきません。そして、片方の車輪をもう片方より大きくしてみると、うまくいきました。

“What if we made it into a tractor?” We used the big back wheels to make a tractor-shape out of our car, and it moved much faster! We saw that the big wheels turn faster than the smaller wheels, which is why it let the car turn last time.

“What if we made it taller?” We extended the axles on the wheels. Now, our car began to bounce up and down when it drove. We were starting to get very creative!

「トラクターにしたらどうだろう？」。大きな後輪を使って、車をトラクター型にしたら、ずっと速く動きました。大きな車輪は小さな車輪よりも速く回ることがわかり、そのおかげで前回は車を旋回させることができました。

「もっと背を高くしたらどうだろう？」。 私たちは、車輪の車軸を伸ばしました。すると、車が上下に跳ねるようになったのです。私たちは、とてもクリエイティブになり始めているのです。

It was a creative way to end the month. As February rolls around, we will start to get involved in different topics, such as what people do in their jobs, and why it’s important.

We will be working hard to prepare for the end of the year, as well. Let’s do our best and enjoy ourselves!

春に向けて、新しいお友だちが次々と参加してくれて、とてもわくわく気分です。最年少のお友だちは、さっそく親指と人差し指をパクパク使う「ファインモータースキル（お箸や鉛筆などの細かい作業をするために必要な運動能力）」の遊びです。みんなセンス抜群でびっくりです。
