先週の「プリ・クラス」では、Topic「地球」から、地上で発生する「自然災害」に目をむけ、なぜ災害が発生するのかを知るために地球の構造を確認したり、実際に災害が発生した場合の対処を体験したりと、体も頭も楽しく動かしながら学びを深めていきました。さらに「火山」の面白い実験も登場し、キャーキャー声をあげながらみんなで楽しみました。

暑い夏を乗り切って、Activityが盛りだくさんの秋も目の前。これからも体も頭もさらに動かしながら、楽しく学んでいきましょうね。

Earthquakes! Volcanos! Floods! Oh no😱

This week, we continued our topic of the Earth as planned. However, we started to go below the surface this time!　Of course, planet Earth is covered in so many amazing living things, delicate ecosystems, and new sights to see.

But what happens under the ground is pretty amazing too. Giant, continent-sized plates move back and forth on a sea of magma, bumping into each other and shaking the ground. They are so big that we can’t even imagine what they look like, but we can certainly feel their effects.

We started this week by taking the word nature, that we talked about before, and compared it to the term natural disaster. That means something from nature, that we cannot control, that causes a big problem for us. We might not be able to stop it from happening, but we can prepare for it so we know what to do and hopefully stay safe.

今週は予定通り地球をテーマにしました。ただし今回は地表の下へと進みました。もちろん、地球は数多くの素晴らしい生物、繊細な生態系、そして新しい光景で覆われています。

しかし、地下で起こっていることもまた驚くべきものです。大陸ほどの大きさの巨大なプレートがマグマの海の上で前後に動き、互いにぶつかり合って地面を揺さぶります。その大きさは想像もできませんが、その影響は確かに感じることができます。

今週は、以前お話しした「自然」という言葉を「自然災害」と比較することから始めました。自然災害とは、私たちが制御できない、自然界から生じる何かが私たちに大きな問題を引き起こすことを意味します。それを止めることはできないかもしれませんが、備えをして、何をすべきかを知って、できれば安全を確保することができます。

About earthquakes

We started by talking about earthquakes. In teams, we had a short time to build a shelter for our ducks. We would use simple and unfastened materials at first, like Kapla blocks, and we found that while we could make nice-looking houses…

…they quickly fell down once the ground started shaking!

We tried other things, like magnets that attach to each other, as well as lego that would let us make even more complex structures. We learned that houses with big bases, strong walls, and supported roofs made the best houses. If we tried to build too high without the right materials, it would just tumble down when the natural disaster happened.

まず地震について話し合いました。チームに分かれ、アヒル用の避難所を作る短い時間が与えられました。最初はカプラブロックのようなシンプルで固定しない材料を使い、見た目は良い家を作れることに気づきましたが…

…地面が揺れ始めるとすぐに崩れてしまいました。

次に磁石でくっつける方法や、より複雑な構造が作れるレゴを試しました。広い土台、頑丈な壁、支えのある屋根を持つ家こそが最良だと学びました。適切な材料なしで高さを追求すると、災害が起きた瞬間に崩れ落ちるだけだと分かったのです。

Game about different natural disasters

Earthquakes aren’t the only kind of natural disaster, though. Hurricanes bring winds that are strong enough to break houses down on their own. Typhoons or tsunamis can cause floods that can be dangerous for everyone.

We played a game in the morning about different natural disasters. I gave everyone mats to prepare with, then I would call out different disasters with a countdown. They had only a few seconds to figure out what to do!

・For floods: find a high place! Climb or stand atop something.
・For earthquakes: cover your head! Protect yourself by hiding under a strong structure.
・For typhoons: hold on tight! Make sure you don’t get blown away!

地震だけが自然災害ではありません。ハリケーンは家屋を倒壊させるほどの強風をもたらします。台風や津波は洪水を引き起こし、すべての人にとって危険です。

午前中は様々な自然災害をテーマにしたゲームをしました。全員に準備用のマットを配り、私がカウントダウンで災害名を叫ぶと、数秒で対応策を考えなければなりませんでした！

・洪水の場合：高い場所へ避難！何か高い物の上に登るか立つ。
・地震の場合：頭を守る！頑丈な構造物の下に隠れて身を守る。
・台風の場合：しっかりつかまる！吹き飛ばされないようにする！

As a bonus challenge, we added in volcanos!

We know that volcanos erupting is rare, but they made for an exciting challenge. We would need to protect our heads from falling rocks, hold on from the shaking, and climb up to avoid pouring lava!

Volcanos are scary, but they are also interesting things that really occur on Earth. We wondered about how the tectonic plates shift and where magma came from. Our next lesson, then, was about the layers of the Earth.

We learned about the crust: where we live! The surface of the Earth is covered in soil and rock, as well as all living things and water.

火山が噴火するのは稀だと知っていますが、それは刺激的な挑戦となりました。落下する岩から頭を守り、揺れに耐え、流れ出る溶岩を避けるために登らなければなりません。

火山は怖いですが、地球上で実際に起きる興味深い現象でもあります。私たちは、プレートがどのように移動するのか、マグマはどこから来るのかについて考えました。次の授業では、地球の層について学びました。

地殻について学びました：私たちが住む場所です！地球の表面は土壌や岩石、そしてあらゆる生物や水で覆われています。

・We learned about the crust: where we live! The surface of the Earth is covered in soil and rock, as well as all living things and water.

・We learned about the mantle: where magma flows! We learned magma is melted rock, and it’s very hot down there. When the plates move, sometimes the pressure causes it to burst up into a volcano.

・We learned about the outer core: it’s even hotter here! It’s all liquid, but it’s not magma anymore. Here, it’s melted metal!

・We learned about the inner core: the very middle of the Earth! It’s a giant ball of iron and nickel.

・地殻について学びました：私たちが住む場所です！地球の表面は土壌や岩石、そしてあらゆる生物や水で覆われています。

・マントルについて学びました：マグマが流れる場所です！マグマは溶けた岩石であり、その深部は非常に高温だと知りました。プレートが動く際、圧力によって噴火口から噴き出すことがあるのです。

・外核について学びました：ここはさらに高温です！全てが液体ですが、もはやマグマではありません。ここでは金属が溶けているのです！

・内核について学びました：地球のまさに中心部です！鉄とニッケルでできた巨大な球体です。

We answered lots of questions, like why it is a circle, and why it’s so hot. We also talked about the history of the world, and how the Earth was made. It is a pretty amazing story!

It was fun to focus on science this week. We did some experiments, such as making a volcano explode. We used the same baking soda and vinegar combination, colored with food dye, to make our own magma.

It was a lot to learn, but hopefully we can remember what we learned for when we encounter it again in elementary school or elsewhere in life. The Earth is really a unique and exciting place, even deep below the ground!

たくさんの質問に答えました。例えば、なぜ丸いのか、なぜそんなに熱いのか。世界の歴史や地球ができた過程についても話しました。本当に驚くべき物語です。

今週は科学に集中できて楽しかったです。火山を噴火させる実験もしました。重曹と酢を混ぜ、食用色素で着色して自分たちでマグマを作りました。

学ぶことはたくさんありましたが、小学校や人生のどこかで再び出会った時に、覚えているといいですね。地球は本当にユニークでワクワクする場所です。地中深くまで含めて！
