9月になり「プリ・クラス」のTopicが「地球」になりました。8月のプラネタリウム見学の際、「地球」と惑星、銀河についての壮大な話題については、すでにみんなで確認済み。この日はもう少し身近なところに視線を移し、「地球」を構成している「matter（物質）」が話題になりました。

「matter」という単語は、使い方が広くて日本人にとっては大変なのですが…😨、まずとりあげたのは、「matter」のなかでも地球の97%と言われる「水」です。

氷から水、そして水蒸気へと変化する様子から「個体・液体・気体」を体感。さらに実際に「気体」を発生させる実験では、みんな大盛り上がり。子どもたちにとっては、まさに「It was like magic!」を経験できたようです。

Things That Matter

We had a particularly learning-intensive week this time! By the time Friday came around, it was our chance to take a “brain break”. We today, we enjoyed fun dances and songs, simple coloring and pasting, and PE class.

One of the big topics we talked about this week is “matter”. Matter is a funny word, because we hear it all the time in other sentences. “What’s the matter?” or “It doesn’t matter” are common phrases in English. The matter we are talking about though is the word for the building blocks of all things that we know!

Trees, rocks, books, toys, even people are made of matter. And that matter can change!

今週は特に学びが詰まった1週間でした。金曜日になると、いよいよ「ブレインブレイク」の時間。楽しいダンスや歌、簡単な塗り絵と貼り絵、そして体育の授業を楽しみました。

今週話し合った大きなトピックの一つは「物質」です。「物質」という言葉は面白いですよね。というのも、他の文章でもこの言葉をよく耳にするからです。「どうしたの？」「関係ないよ」といったフレーズは英語ではよく使われます。でも、ここで私たちが話している「物質」とは、私たちが知っているすべてのものの構成要素を表す言葉なのです！

木、岩、本、おもちゃ、そして人間でさえも、物質でできています。そして、その物質は変化することもあるのです。

It was like magic!

This change is what we were interested in. We learned three key words: solid, liquid, and gas. Matter is hard to understand, but these three we could actually see! If you take a solid ice cube and put it in a bowl, it will slowly melt, turning to liquid water. Put that on the stove and turn up the heat, and before long it will boil, becoming a gas: steam!

We looked at ice and water, but we had another kind of experiment to see gas. This time, we would use baking soda and vinegar to create CO2 (carbon dioxide). It is a clear gas that we can’t see, even though we breathe it out all the time. By mixing them in a bottle and putting a balloon on the top, we watched in surprise as the balloon quickly filled up on its own! It was like magic!

この変化こそが、私たちが興味を持った点です。固体、液体、気体という3つのキーワードを学びました。物質は理解しにくいものですが、この3つは実際に目で見ることができるのです。固体の氷をボウルに入れると、ゆっくりと溶けて液体の水に変わります。それをコンロにかけ、火を強めると、やがて沸騰して気体、つまり蒸気になります。

氷と水を観察しましたが、今回は別の方法で気体を見る実験を行いました。重曹と酢を使ってCO2（二酸化炭素）を作ります。CO2は目に見えない透明な気体ですが、私たちはいつも呼吸で吐き出しています。この2つを瓶の中で混ぜ、その上に風船を置くと、あっという間に風船が膨らんでいくのを見て、私たちは驚きました。まるで魔法のようでした。

We could really see how the gas pushed against the inside of the bottle! When we closed it shut, the bottle would bulge with pressure. Then when we opened it again, we could hear the loud “fizzing” noise as the CO2 gas escaped.

It was a stinky, funny, and sometimes scary experiment, but it was also fascinating!

ガスがボトルの内側に押し付けられる様子がはっきりと分かりました。ボトルを閉めると、圧力でボトルが膨らみます。そして再び開けると、二酸化炭素ガスが抜け出す大きな「シュワシュワ」という音が聞こえました。

酢のにおいが鼻につきましたが、面白くて、少し怖い実験でしたが、同時にとても興味深い体験でした。

We played a game that helped us memorize the different states of matter. When we acted as solids, we froze in place, making hard or cube-like shapes with our bodies. When we acted as liquid, we started moving around, wiggling our limbs like water. When we acted as gas, we became free! We flew around the room far apart from each other.

It is a complicated topic, but we learned about it in a way that we can see every day. We talked about cooking, weather, and other examples where we can see matter change state. We made a big list of what kinds of solids, liquids, and gases we can see. We are solids too!

物質の様々な状態を覚えるのに役立つゲームをしました。固体のふりをすると、その場で凍りつき、体で硬い形や立方体のような形を作りました。液体のふりをすると、水のように手足をくねらせて動き回りました。気体のふりをすると、自由になりました。部屋の中を互いに遠く離れて飛び回りました。

複雑なテーマですが、日常生活で目にする形で学びました。料理、天気、その他物質の状態変化が見られる例について話しました。目に見えている固体、液体、気体の種類をリストアップしました。私たちも固体なのです！
