インターナショナル・プリスクールCHES

8月にはいり、「プリ・クラス」のTopicが「動物」に替りました。各クラスが学齢に応じてそれぞれ「動物」について学びを深めるなか、この日のRed Fox・White Owl（年中・年長学齢）のクラスは、歯の形から、草食・肉食・雑食を考えることがテーマ。

ところで、スイカを食べる私たちは？ 実は自分たちが「雑食」だと気づいて少しとまどった子どもたちもいたようですが…🙄、さっそくCHES Gardenで収穫した小さなスイカと頂いた大きなスイカでスイカ割りを開催。

ところが、そのまえにクイズが始まりました。CHES Gardenの「葉」と収穫できる食べ物を当てるゲームです。5種類の葉をみながら、イチゴ・キュウリ・ぶどう・ミニトマト・スイカを当てなければなりません。

結果は、もちろんほぼパーフェクト！ みんなが、毎日CHES Gardenの収穫時期を心配そうに見届けているだけはあります。

クイズを無事に乗り切った後、はりきってスイカ割りを楽しみました。おなか一杯スイカを味わって、みんな大満足でした。

Watermelon Hitting!

It is August and we are reaching the midsummer. It’s the typical time for harvesting watermelon. Before that though, we have already started on our monthly topic, which for this month is animals.

However, since we talked everything about insects already in July, we focused on the other groups. Some we knew already: birds, fish, mammals, reptiles…

They were so few compared to the ones we didn’t know, though. Things like mollusks and annelids, what are those? We found out that the world of living things is SO BIG with SO MUCH to learn! We will keep learning about animals as the month goes on.

8月になり、夏本番を迎えました。スイカの収穫時期ですね。でも、その前に、今月のテーマである動物について学び始めました。

昆虫については7月に既に詳しく話したので、今回は他のグループに焦点を当てました。鳥類、魚類、哺乳類、爬虫類など、すでに知っているものもありましたが…

でも、知らないものに比べると、その数はほんのわずかでした。軟体動物や環形動物って何だろう？ 生き物の世界はこんなに広くて、学ぶべきことがたくさんあるんだと実感しました。今月は動物について学び続けていきます。

We can eat anything!

One thing we did focus on though were animal teeth and the different things they eat. We talked about carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores and how their teeth look different.

Some of us were surprised to find that humans (us!), relatives of apes and monkeys, are animals too, and we are omnivores. You can eat both meat and vegetables, right? How about watermelon?

特に重点的に学んだのは、動物の歯と、彼らが食べるものの違いです。肉食動物、草食動物、雑食動物について、それぞれの歯の見た目の違いについて話し合いました。

類人猿やサルの親戚である人間（私たち！）も動物であり、しかも雑食であることに驚いた人もいました。肉も野菜も食べられますよね？ スイカはどうでしょう？

About our watermelon!

I guess it’s time for me to talk about our watermelon!

We harvested some watermelons from our garden. They were a little small, but when we held them, they felt very heavy. We can really feel that they are full of water. We were excited to try it, but we would need to wait until the event!

Today, we gathered in CHES park and talked about the vegetables and fruit from our garden. We looked at the different size, shape, and texture of the leaves and tried to guess what foods matched with what leaves. Vegetables and fruits are plants after all!

We did a pretty good job at guessing. After all, we see these leaves almost every day in CHES garden.

そろそろCHESのスイカについてお話しましょう！

CHES Gardenでスイカを収穫しました。少し小さめでしたが、手に持つとずっしりと重みがあり、たっぷりと水分が詰まっているのが分かります。食べるのが待ち遠しかったのですが、イベントまでお預けです。

今日はCHES Parkに集まり、庭で採れた野菜や果物について話し合いました。葉っぱの大きさ、形、質感の違いを見て、どの葉っぱがどんな食べ物なのかを当ててみました。野菜も果物も植物ですからね。

子どもたちはなかなかいい推測が出来ましたよ。CHES Gardenではほぼ毎日、これらの葉っぱを目にしていますからね。

It was time for Suika-Wari!

However, this was just to warm up. After that, we put on our blindfolds and grabbed our hammers. It was time for Suika-Wari!

We received a donation of a much bigger watermelon than the one we grew, so we were able to try and hit that one! It was fun to try and hit it while listening to all our friends shout “Left! Right! Forward!” Of course, with the squeaky hammer, we weren’t able to break the hard skin.

But when we were done, we could break it open with a knife! It was time to enjoy the juicy fruit! We ate our fill in the sun before it was time to say goodbye.

でも、これはウォーミングアップに過ぎませんでした。その後、目隠しをしてハンマーを手に取りました。いよいよスイカ割りの時間です！

自分たちが育てたものよりずっと大きなスイカを寄付してもらったので、それを叩いてみました！友だちみんなが「左！右！前！」と叫ぶのを聞きながら、叩くのは楽しかったです。もちろん、ピコピコと鳴るハンマーでは硬い皮を割ることはできませんでした…。

でも、やっとナイフで割ることができたんです。ジューシーなスイカを堪能する時間です。太陽の下でお腹いっぱいスイカを食べて、お別れの時間となりました。
