この日、「プリ・クラス」全員で「節分」について考えてみました。「節分って？」「鬼って？」「良いの？ 悪いの？」等など。いろいろな話が出てきたのですが、「とにかく準備をしておこう！」ということで、新聞紙を丸めて豆をつくり始めると、さっそく鬼が出現という噂が。

CHES Parkに行ってみると、まさにそこに鬼が。練習どおりにみんなで力をあわせての鬼退治です。

鬼退治が終わってみると、「福は内」の意味もみんな納得。節分のイベントを楽しくお祝いしました。今年も幸運がいっぱいの一年になりますように。

What is Setsubun?

It is February 3rd today. Do you know what that means? It’s time for Setsubun! But what is Setsubun, really?

This week, Red Fox, White Owl, and Blue Bird all joined up together to talk, make crafts, and play games related to the event! Today though, we spent the morning discussing the meaning. Some children had questions. Why is Setsubun on February 3rd? And are what about the oni? Are they bad, or nice? Finally, everyone knew about “oni wa soto”, but nobody knew the meaning of “fuku wa uchi”.

We talked about how the oni are not bad or good, but they are from nature. If the oni come to our house, we might have bad luck. Just like a bad windstorm or an earthquake might come. We can only hope and prepare.

2月3日。この日はなにか知っていますか？ 節分の日。でも、節分って一体なになのでしょう？

今週は、Red FoxとWhite Owl、Blue Birdクラスの全員が集まって、節分にちなんだお話をしたり、工作をしたり、ゲームをしたりしました。この日の午前中、節分の意味について話し合いました。子どもたちからは質問もありました。「なぜ節分は2月3日なの？」「鬼ってなになの？」「鬼は悪いもの？それともいいもの？」「鬼は外」はみんな知っていましたが、「福は内」の意味を知っている人はいませんでした。

鬼は悪いものでも良いものでもないけれど、自然界から来たものだということについて話しました。鬼が家に来たら、ひどい風や地震が来るように、不運が訪れるかもしれません。私たちにできることは、ただ希望を持ち、備えることだけです。

“fuku wa uchi”

We talked about how February is the beginning of the Lunar New Year and when we are getting close to spring. This might be a good time to think about the upcoming year and to hope that nothing bad comes our way!

Finally, we came to the meaning of “fuku wa uchi”. Instead of bad luck in our homes, we are hoping for good luck for the year! Hopefully this will come true.

That didn’t stop anyone from believing that a real oni could come through the door at any minute, though. And if we were going to properly prepare, we needed beans! We approached this from two sides: a cup to hold beans, and our own version of beans made from paper.

2月は旧正月の始まりで、春が近づいている時期だと話しました。この時期は、これからの一年について考え、悪いことが起こらないように祈るのに良い時期かもしれませんね。

そして、「福は内」の意味にたどり着きました。家の中に不運が訪れるのではなく、一年を通して幸運が訪れることを願うのです。願わくは、そうなりますように。

とはいえ、本物の鬼がいつ家の中に入ってくるか分からないという思いは、誰もが捨てきれません。そして、きちんと準備するには、豆が必要でした。そこで豆を入れるカップと、紙で作った豆の2つの方法を考えました。

To make the cup, we colored our oni face and glued it to the lip of the cup. There were many different colors of oni, from red, blue, and even yellow. Everyone had their own ideas about which color of oni is the kindest.

Then, we decorated the cup with colors and patterned origami, and added a pipe cleaner as a handle. It turned out very cute, and very useful, too!

Take it home and be sure to fill it with beans today, to make sure you are ready. To make the paper beans, we simply balled up some newspaper while working as a team. We measured the paper and ripped it gently, and soon we had a few bowls full.

カップを作るには、鬼の顔に色を塗ってカップの縁に貼り付けました。鬼の色は赤、青、黄色など様々で、どの色の鬼が一番優しいかはみんなそれぞれ考えていました。

それから、色とりどりの折り紙でカップを飾り、持ち手としてパイプクリーナーを付けました。とても可愛くて、とても便利です。

カップは家に持ち帰って、今日中に豆を詰めて準備しておきましょう。紙豆を作るには、チームで協力しながら新聞紙を丸めました。紙を測り、優しく破いて、すぐに数杯分になりました。

We will hope that the year has only good luck for us

We heard reports that oni might be around, so we took our beans to CHES park. Sure enough, some oni appeared behind the curtain! We took aim and fired!

We had practiced throwing in the park earlier, so we were ready. The oni didn’t stand a chance. After the event, we saw that the oni were just masks after all. Maybe the real oni would come later? Better be ready for anything!

We enjoyed our time celebrating the event, and we will hope that the year has only good luck for us.

鬼が出るかもしれないという噂を聞き、豆を持ってCHES Parkへ行きました。すると、なんとカーテンの後ろに鬼が現れたのです。狙いを定めて撃ちました。

豆投げの練習をしていたので、準備万端でした。鬼は歯が立たない様子。節分のイベントが終わってみると、鬼は結局仮面だったことがわかりました。もしかしたら、本物の鬼は後で現れるかもしれません。どんな状況にも対応できるように準備しておいた方がいいですね。

節分のイベントを楽しくお祝いしました。今年は幸運がいっぱいの一年になりますように。
