お正月気分も少し抜けてきて、「プリ・クラス」では1月のTopicの1つ「Vehicles（乗り物）」をいろいろな角度から掘り下げています。年中学齢以上のRed FoxとWhite Owlのクラスでは、この日のテーマは「空飛ぶ乗り物 」。先日は紙飛行機をみんなで作って楽しく飛ばしていましたが、今度は「パラシュート」。果たして空中でうまく滑空できたのでしょうか。

そして年少学齢のBlue Birdクラスは「陸」の乗り物に焦点をあてて、いろんな種類の乗り物について学んでいきました。なぜか、この学齢の子どもたちは「乗り物」が大好きですよね。

Red Fox / White Owl Class

Last week, we had begun to talk about flying vehicles, and even folded our own paper airplanes. We had thought about the definition of vehicle at that time, and some things such as parachutes were suggested.

This week, we decided to try it out. We started with the knowledge we had gained from the paper airplane and other experiments. We needed something very light if it was going to stay in the air. Not only that though, it needed one heavy point to direct it in the air. In a plane, that’s the nose. In a parachute, that is the person (or thing) pulling it down.

先週、私たちは空飛ぶ乗り物について話し始め、自分たちで紙飛行機を折りました。その時、乗り物の定義について考え、パラシュートのようなものが提案されました。

今週は、実際に紙飛行機を試してみることにしました。紙飛行機や他の実験で得た知識を使って始めました。空中にとどまるためには、とても軽いものが必要でした。しかし、それだけでなく、空中で方向を決めるための重い点が一つ必要でした。飛行機なら機首、パラシュートなら、それを引き下げる人（または物）です。

We knew it needed to be balanced, and we knew it needed to be able to catch air. We tried various different materials in combination, and ended up with two parachutes: one made of paper towel with four strings, and another made from a plastic bag, with two strings.

We tried different payloads too: a heavier lego man, and a lighter pipe cleaner man. The lego was much too heavy and fell quickly, but the other glided elegantly. We had done it!

We took it to the park and tried sending it flying from high places. If it caught the wind, it soared! It is an easy experiment to try at home, so try making your own parachute too if you like.

バランスが取れていること、そして空気を捉えられることが大切だと分かっていました。様々な素材を組み合わせて試した結果、最終的に2つのパラシュートが完成しました。1つはペーパータオルで4本の紐、もう1つはビニール袋で2本の紐を作りました。

さらに、重いレゴ人形と軽いパイプクリーナー人形という異なる種類の積載物も試しました。レゴ人形は重すぎてすぐに落ちてしまいましたが、もう1つは優雅に滑空しました。ついに成功です！

公園に持って行き、高いところから飛ばしてみました。風に当たると、空高く舞い上がりました！

これは自宅でも簡単に試せる実験なので、もしよろしければ、自分でパラシュートを作ってみてください。

Blue Bird Class

This week, we focused on land and water vehicles. Vehicles are very interesting, and we learned that they can be categorized based on where they travel.

When I asked them about the vehicles, they see every day, their answers were mostly about land vehicles. They mentioned cars, motorbikes, and ambulances. We remembered the vocabulary we learned during our Earth topic and realized that all of these vehicles travel on “land”. That is why they are called land vehicles.

We learned that land vehicles have wheels and use roads. During circle time, we also talked about road safety by linking the two topics together. We looked at different traffic signs and discussed their meanings, including the stop sign, speed limit sign, and a few others.

今週は陸上と水上の乗り物に焦点を当てました。乗り物はとても興味深く、移動する場所によって分類できることを学びました。

生徒たちに毎日目にする乗り物について尋ねると、答えはほとんどが陸上の乗り物に関するものでした。車、バイク、救急車などを挙げました。地球のテーマで学んだ語彙を思い出し、これらの乗り物はすべて「陸」を移動していることに気づきました。だからこそ、これらは「陸の乗り物」と呼ばれるのです。

陸上の乗り物には車輪があり、道路を使うことを学びました。サークルタイムでは、この2つのテーマを関連付けて、交通安全についても話し合いました。一時停止標識、制限速度標識など、様々な交通標識を見て、その意味について話し合いました。
