暑い日々が続いた7月でしたが、「プリ・クラス」の子どもたちは、Topic「虫」をさまざまな角度から英語で学びながら、授業の合間に思い思いの手作りクラフトもてがけてきました。

各クラスのクラフトの画像をみていると、作業をしながらわいわいがやがやしていた声までいまにも聞こえてきそうです。本当に暑かった7月でしたが、卒園生が夏休みのあいまに参加してくれたり、みんなで一緒にクラフト作ったりしながら楽しく乗り切れました。

8月からTopicは「Animals」。このTopicも子どもたちに大人気。8月も暑さに負けずにみんなで楽しんでいきましょうね。

About New Insect Topics

This week, we have been studying hard about new insect topics, such as mouthparts and what they eat. We learned lots of new words, and filled out worksheets to help remember the differences.

We also learned some practical facts, like how to tell a butterfly from a moth, or how many legs a centipede has compared to a millipede! We learned a new dance, and had lots of fun acting like bugs throughout the day.

今週は、虫の口や食べ物など、昆虫に関する新しいテーマについて一生懸命勉強しました。たくさんの新しい単語を覚え、違いを覚えるためのワークシートに記入しました。

「蝶」と「蛾」の見分け方や、「ムカデ」と「ヤスデ」の足の数の違いなど、実用的な知識も学びました。新しいダンスも覚え、一日中虫になりきって楽しく遊びました。

Since we had a break from our pianica class on Wednesday, we instead decided to make a quick craft. Using some old clothespins from a previous class, we colored them and added some features, like wings and eyes, to make some recognizable dragonflies!

As a bonus, they would be able to pin onto our blouses or hats to make for excellent accessories.

水曜日はピアニカのクラスがお休みだったので、代わりに簡単な工作をすることにしました。前のクラスで使った洗濯バサミを使って、トンボに色を塗り、羽や目などの特徴を付け足して、トンボの姿にしてみました。

おまけに、作ったトンボはブラウスや帽子にピンで留めて、素敵なアクセサリーにもなりますよ。

Pay Attention to

Even simple crafts have plenty of rules to pay attention to.

For example, if we pasted the eyes on the wrong side of the clothespin, we wouldn’t be able to hold it and open it nicely. If we played with the clothespin too much or opened it too wide, it might break apart. When making the wings, we needed to fold the paper correctly and cut on the correct side.

Learning to follow rules and seeing the consequences of our actions in a safe way is an important part of making crafts. And when we are done, we have a cute dragonfly we can play with, too!

簡単な工作でも、注意すべきルールはたくさんあります。

例えば、洗濯バサミの端にトンボの目を間違って貼ってしまうと、うまく持てず、開けることができません。洗濯バサミをいじりすぎたり、大きく広げすぎたりすると、壊れてしまうかもしれません。羽を作るときは、紙を正しく折り、正しい側で切る必要がありました。

ルールを守り、自分の行動がもたらす結果を安全に理解することは、工作をする上で大切なことです。完成したら、遊ぶことができるかわいいトンボも手に入ります！

Are All Ladybugs Red?

We started by looking at a picture of a ladybug and spotted some of their special features, such as their spots and colorful shell.

We all agreed that ladybugs are cute little creatures! Just like all other bugs, they have six legs and antennae, and they also have wings hidden under their colorful shell. We learned that their wings are very delicate and the shell helps protect them.

先週は少し忙しかったので、今週も引き続き「てんとう虫」のテーマを扱いました。

まずはてんとう虫の写真を見て、斑点やカラフルな殻など、てんとう虫の特徴をいくつか見つけました。

てんとう虫はかわいい生き物だとみんなの意見は一致しました。他の虫と同じように、てんとう虫にも6本の足と触角があり、カラフルな殻の下には羽が隠れています。てんとう虫の羽はとても繊細で、殻が羽を守っていることを学びました。

After talking about the purpose of the shell, we couldn’t help but wonder: are all ladybugs red? We found out the answer later, they’re not! There are many different types of ladybugs, and they can be red, black, or even yellow.

Their colorful shells serve as a warning to predators, letting them know that ladybugs aren’t very tasty!

We also explored the life cycle of a ladybug. We learned that the stages are called egg, larva, pupa, and ladybug. After all that learning, we made a ladybug craft together.

殻の役割について話し合った後、私たちは思わず疑問に思いました。「てんとう虫はみんな赤いの？」。答えは後で分かりました。そうではなかったのです。てんとう虫にはたくさんの種類があり、赤、黒、黄色のものもありました。

カラフルな殻は、天敵への警告の役割を果たしていて、てんとう虫はあまり美味しくないことを知らせる役割を果があったのです。

また、てんとう虫のライフサイクルについても調べました。卵、幼虫、蛹、そしててんとう虫の段階があることを学びました。学んだ後、てんとう虫の工作をみんなでしました。
