この暑い夏にぴったりのアクティビティの日。「アイス」を頭のなかにイメージしながら、子どもたちは朝からワクワク登園してきました。

ところが準備が始まると、Mr. Seanからは「アイスキャンディーとはなにか」についての説明が始まりました。すでに「アイス」で頭の中が一杯の子どもたちに、果たしてどこまで「アイスクリーム？」「アイス？」の説明が届くのか、少し心配だったのですが…。

子どもたちの表情は真剣そのもの。それもそのはず、自分たちで選んだ味のアイスキャンディを作って食べられる絶好の機会です。おかげですべてのクラスの子どもたちが、施設内も制服もベタベタにならず💦、楽しく過ごすことができました。

もうすぐCHES100Days。4月の始業式から100日になります。この子どもたちの様子をみて、Mr. Seanも少し安心したようです😝

Popsicle Picnic

It’s a hot day today. Just a few minutes out in the sun, and we can feel the sweat drip down our foreheads. However, a little bit of sweat is good! It makes it feel that much better when we head back into the shade.

Today was our long-awaited popsicle picnic! Okay, I think it’s time to talk about our popsicles!

First, we needed to talk about what a popsicle is. There are many words for them from a mixture of Japanese and English. “Ice candy”, “Ice cream”, or just “Ice” are all common names. However, in English, popsicles are different from all these things.

暑いですね。ほんの数分太陽の下に出ただけで、額から汗が流れ落ちてきます。でも、少しの汗はいいものです。日陰に戻ると、気持ちがさらに良くなります。

今日は待ちに待ったアイスキャンディー・ピクニックです。さて、アイスキャンディーについてお話しましょう。

まずは、「アイスキャンディー」とは何かについてお話します。アイスキャンディーには、日本語と英語が混ざった様々な言葉があります。「アイスキャンディー」「アイスクリーム」「アイス」など、どれもよく使われる呼び名です。しかし、英語でのアイスキャンディーとは、これらとは全く異なるものです。

We can quite easily make them

They are not candy or cream. They are just frozen juice! Because of this, we can quite easily make them ourselves. We chose apple and orange as the flavors for this year, and making a mixture between them was quite popular.

Once we had filled up all our containers and made sure we had enough, we put them in the freezer to freeze overnight. By morning, they would be ready to go!

The whole day today, we were anticipating our dessert. We had an early lunch, put on our smocks, and set up a little picnic area in CHES park! The warm sun and peaceful weather let us enjoy our popsicles and relax a little bit after a busy day of learning and playing.

キャンディーでもクリームでもありません。ただの冷凍ジュースです。だから、簡単に手作りできます。今年はリンゴとオレンジのフレーバーを選びましたが、その2種類を混ぜて作るのがとても好評でした。

容器にジュースを全部詰め、十分な量があることを確認し、冷凍庫に入れて一晩凍らせました。朝には出来上がりです。

今日は一日中、デザートを楽しみにしていました。早めの昼食をとり、スモックを着て、CHES Gardenに小さなピクニックエリアを設けました。暖かい日差しと穏やかな天気のおかげで、勉強と遊びで忙しい一日の後に、アイスキャンディーを食べて少しリラックスすることができました。

We took our time and enjoyed them. Even though it was only one popsicle, we could eat it slowly and taste the sweet and cold flavor. It always tastes better when you make something yourself!

Afterwards, we washed ourselves down with the hose so we wouldn’t be sticky, and sat in the sun for a while to dry.

We took the time to talk about the future of our class. With 100 days of CHES coming up soon, it was time to think about what kinds of students Red Fox and White Owl would be.

ゆっくりと時間をかけて味わいました。たった1本のアイスキャンディーでしたが、ゆっくりと食べ、甘くて冷たい味を味わうことができました。自分で作ったものはやっぱり美味しいですね。

その後は、ベタベタにならないように水で体を洗い、しばらく日光浴をして体を乾かしました。

クラスの将来について話し合う時間も設けました。もうすぐCHESの100日目を迎えるにあたり、Red Foxと White Owlの子どもたちがどんな生徒になるのかを考える時間となりました。

Could White Owl be smart and helpful role models for everyone, and be ready to be independent by grade 1? Could Red Fox learn what it means to be a big kid in the school, and follow in White Owl’s footsteps?

Of course!

We enjoyed the popsicle picnic, and we will enjoy more events too, but only if everyone can prove that they can listen and their teacher can trust them. That’s our deal, and so far, I haven’t been disappointed.
