「プリ・クラス」の子どもたちは、引き続き7月のTopic「虫」の学びを深めています。

虫のライフ・サイクルを考えていると、園児のひとりが持ってきてくれていた「さなぎ」がきれいなアゲハ蝶に。まさにライフ・サイクルの瞬間をみんなで体験することができました。

「虫」について英語で学んでいくと、虫の種類や成長過程、体のパーツなど、普段の日常会話ではあまり出くわさない様々な語彙も登場してくるので、子どもたちにとってはさらに興味が湧いてくるようです。

まだまだ暑い夏は続いていきますが、一歩外に出てみると、教室で学んだ「虫」に関連することが追体験できる良い季節。7月も残り少なくなってきましたが、みんなで楽しんでいこうね。

Insects Have Six Legs🦋

Have you heard the cicadas in the trees? They made it on time this year. They certainly make it feel like summer.

We already learned about cicadas in class. They are quite interesting. First, they begin as eggs, tucked away into small crevices in tree branches. Then as they hatch, they tumble down to the ground and dig a hole.

These nymphs will live underground for a few years, drinking sap from the tree roots to live. When it is finally time, they will crawl out of their holes and find a good tree to hang on to. Then, the metamorphosis can begin! The adult cicada emerges from its old shell. Then it can go on to lay new eggs and start the cycle again.

木々からセミの鳴き声が聞こえてきましたか？ 今年も季節にあわせてやって来ましたね。まさに夏の到来を感じさせてくれます。

セミについては授業で学びました。セミって本当に面白い生き物です。まず、卵から始まり、木の枝の小さな隙間に隠れます。そして孵化すると、地面に転がり落ちて穴を掘ります。

幼虫は数年間、地中で木の根から樹液を吸って生きていきます。そして、いよいよ時が来ると穴から這い出し、しがみつくのにちょうどいい木を見つけます。そして変態を始めるのです。そして成虫のセミは古い殻から出てきます。そして新しい卵を産み、また同じサイクルを始めます。

Life Cycle

We have been interested in this life cycle this year. Some insects change quite a bit when they grow up. We were able to see some butterflies close up.

It is hard to imagine that these colorful creatures were once caterpillars wriggling like a worm. We started closely examining the parts of an insect and learned some words, like proboscis and exoskeleton. We noticed that insects have six legs, and that their legs always attach to their middle body segment, called a thorax.

Even though most insects look very different from each other, we can find these common traits among them!

私たちは今年、このライフサイクルに興味を持っていました。昆虫の中には、成長すると大きく変化するものもいます。蝶を間近で見ることができました。

これらの色鮮やかな生き物が、かつてはミミズのように身をくねらせていた幼虫だったとは想像しがたいです。昆虫の各部を詳しく観察し、「吻（こうし）」や「外骨格（がいこつ）」といった言葉を学びました。昆虫には6本の脚があり、脚は必ず胸部と呼ばれる体の中央の節に付いていることに気付きました。

ほとんどの昆虫は見た目が大きく異なりますが、共通する特徴も見つけることができるのです。

Let’s keep it up!

In the classroom, our curiosity about insects grew. Piece by piece, we started making our own insect life cycle using different materials.

We got creative and tried to mix realism with cuteness! We soon had eggs and a caterpillar. What insect’s life cycle were we creating?

The cycle was halfway complete. We continued studying and saw that many insects had similar life cycles. Egg to larva, larva to pupa, pupa to adult. Beetles, cicadas, butterflies, even bees and ants follow the same pattern!

教室では、昆虫への好奇心がどんどん膨らんでいきました。少しずつ、様々な材料を使って、自分たちだけの昆虫のライフサイクルを作り始めました。

私たちは創造力を駆使し、リアルさと可愛らしさを融合させようと試みました！ すぐに卵と青虫ができました。どんな昆虫のライフサイクルを作ったのでしょう？

サイクルは半分完成しました。さらに学びを深めていくと、多くの昆虫が似たようなライフサイクルを辿っていることがわかりました。卵から幼虫、幼虫から蛹、蛹から成虫。カブトムシ、セミ、蝶、そしてハチやアリまで、同じパターンを辿っているのです。

We made our own bug book, as well as looking at models of insects, to help us understand. Then we added the next two steps, our cocoon and butterfly!

There’s a lot to learn about bugs, but every day we learn a little bit more.

理解を深めるために、昆虫図鑑を作り、昆虫の模型を見たりしました。そして、次の2つのステップ、繭と蝶を追加しました。

昆虫について学ぶことはたくさんありますが、毎日少しずつ学んでいます。
