前回の「種まき🌻」でお伝えした同じ日、Red Fox（年中学齢）とWhite Owl（年長学齢）クラスの子どもたちも、各種の「plant」を英語で楽しく学んでいました。

苗はどのように育っていくのでしょうか、そして、球根・種はそれぞれどのように発芽し育っていくのでしょうか。種まきや植え付けをし、これから数週間植物のお世話をしながら、子どもたちはそれぞれの植物の成長を見守っていきます。

Welcome to CHES Garden!

All of our learning about plant parts, seeds, and flowers came in handy this week when we finally got our hands on some real plants! We had lots of different things to try. If we wanted to grow real plants, we would need to think about what to do first.

What if we wanted to grow plants in a real garden?

To plant in the garden, we would want to start with seedlings. Seedlings are seeds that have already sprouted. This is important because sometimes seeds take time to grow, or don’t sprout at all. Seedlings have leaves already and can start getting energy from the sun. If we planted them with care, our seedlings would grow into beautiful plants!

CHESガーデンへようこそ！ 植物の各部位、種、花について学んでいたことが、今週ついに本物の植物に触れた時にとても役に立ちました。色々なことに挑戦することができました。本物の植物を育てるのであれば、まずなにをすべきか考えなければなりません。

本物の庭で植物を育てたいとしたらどうでしょうか？

庭に植えるには、まず苗から始めましょう。苗とは、すでに発芽している種子のことです。これは重要なポイントです。なぜなら、種子は成長に時間がかかったり、全く発芽しなかったりすることがあるからです。苗にはすでに葉が付いていて、太陽からエネルギーを吸収し始めることができます。丁寧に植えれば、苗は美しい植物に育っていくはずです。

White Owl worked together with Mr. Tai to add the seedlings to the garden. We had cucumbers, tomatoes, red bell peppers, and even watermelons! With time and care, the garden would hopefully soon be full of wonderful food we can all share.

Of course, vegetables and seedlings aren’t the only kind of plants.

In the classroom, we decided to try a few plant experiments of our own. We knew that seeds would grow when in soil and with water, but there were a lot of other things that could affect how fast or how well they grow. We took a few different kinds of seeds: some herbs, and some flowers, including a big flower bulb, and we considered how to make them grow. We arranged them in such a way that we would be able to see the roots when the seed began to grow.

White Owlの生徒はMr. Taiと一緒に苗を庭に植えました。きゅうり、トマト、赤ピーマン、そしてスイカまで植えました。時間をかけて丁寧に育てれば、庭はきっとみんなで分け合える美味しい食べ物でいっぱいになるでしょう。

もちろん、植物は野菜や苗だけではありません。

教室では、自分たちで植物の実験をいくつかしてみることにしました。種は土と水があれば育つことは知っていましたが、成長の速さや質に影響を与える要素は他にもたくさんあります。ハーブや花、そして大きな球根など、いくつかの種類の種を用意し、どのように育てるかを考えました。種が成長し始めたら根が見える位置に配置し、成長の過程を観察しました。

We looked closely at the seeds and even cut one in half. We remembered the different parts of the seed from earlier in the week: the coat, the food, and the baby plant. We saw how they were different sizes and shapes. We wondered if that changed how they would grow. We also put some seeds into pots and soil, to see if they would grow differently than the ones in a tray.

Of course, the most important part of plant experiments is that they take time. Even if we kept checking on them every 10 minutes, nothing would be different. We would need to be patient if we wanted to see a change. Let’s wait a week, and check again!

種をよく観察し、一つは半分に切ってみました。今週初めに見た種の様々な部分、つまり殻、栄養分、そして子株を思い出しました。それぞれの大きさや形が違うことに気づきました。それが成長の仕方に違いをもたらすのではないかと考えました。また、いくつかの種を鉢や土に植えて、トレイに植えたものとは違う成長をするかどうかを確かめました。

もちろん、植物実験で最も重要なのは、時間がかかることです。10分ごとに確認し続けても、なにも変わりません。変化を見たいのであれば、辛抱強く待つ必要があります。1週間待って、もう一度確認してみましょう。

Little Hands Project

What’s next? We’re not done with our planting yet!

So far, we have had plants to produce food and make our garden beautiful. We also have plants that we grow to learn about them. Finally, we want to grow some plants that can be used for something else.

How about plants that can bring kindness?

For our Little Hands Project, we will try and grow plants from seeds using our own soil, water, and care. We planted mini sunflowers, marigolds, and periwinkle (“vinca”) flowers. We hope they can grow up big and strong!

Let’s see what amazing things we can make with our little hands!

次はなにをしようかな？植えつけはまだ終わりではありません。

これまで、食べ物をつくったり、庭を美しくしたりするために植物を育ててきました。また、植物について学ぶために育てている植物もあります。最後に、なにか他の目的に使える植物を育ててみたいと思います。

「Little Hands Project」では、自分たちで土、水、そして世話をして、種から植物を育ててみようと思います。ミニヒマワリ、マリーゴールド、日日草を植えました。大きくたくましく育ってくれるといいですね。
