先週は、バレンタイン週間ということで、クラス全体の隅々まで甘い香りに包まれていました。ただチョコを作って喜ぶだけでは終わらないのが、さすが年中・年長学齢のRed FoxとWhite Owlの子どもたちです。2月のTopic「仕事」の話題がからんできたり、お友だちとのつながりを感じたりと、一味違ったバレンタインを楽しんでいました。

Working Hard for Valentine’s Day💖

Red Fox / White Owl Class

It may already be halfway through the month, but let me officially wish you a happy February. We have been busy from day 1 with events, special guests, and new topics, and this short week was no different! With today being Valentine’s Day, we wanted to enjoy it together. We prepared throughout the week to share our love with the people around us.

In Japan, Valentine’s Day is traditionally when girls give chocolate to boys. In North America though, Valentine’s Day is much freer. Anyone who cares for someone else can give them a gift, usually a card or a message that shares their feelings.

In various stores, you can buy large packets of cards for kids to write each of their friends’ names on. Then, they will bring them to school and put one into each of their friends’ baskets or cubbies. It was always a fun day to get many cards from friends.

もう月も半ばですが、みんなにとって2月が良い月になるように望んでいます。2月は初日からイベント、特別ゲスト、新しいトピックで忙しくしていましたが、この短い1週間も例外ではありませんでした。今日はバレンタインデーなので、一緒に楽しみたいと思います。周囲の人々と愛を分かち合うために一週間かけて準備をしてきました。

日本では伝統的にバレンタインデーは女の子が男の子にチョコレートを贈る日。しかし北米ではバレンタインデーはもっと自由です。気になる誰にでも、その人にギフト、通常はカードや気持ちを伝えるメッセージを贈ることができます。

さまざまな店で、子どもたちが友だちの名前を書くためのカードを大きなパッケージで購入できます。そして学校にカードを持っていき、友だちのバスケットや収納棚にそれぞれ1枚ずつ入れます。友だちからたくさんのカードをもらって、いつも楽しい一日でした。

This year, I wanted to share that experience with Red Fox and White Owl. To make so many cards would take a lot of work though, so we needed to think of a plan!

First, we would need bags to hold them all in though, so we thought ahead and started designed Valentine’s Day bags to bring everything home. We made stamps from cardboard and added paint to make nice heart shapes. They turned out well!

While those were drying, our next step was to design our own Valentine’s card. We would only need to make one design, and then use technology to copy it many times. We shared a couple sheets of paper, and each wrote our own unique Valentine’s design on it, and signed our name. With love!

今年はその経験をRed FoxとWhite Owlクラスのみんなで共有したいと思いました。ただ、これだけの枚数のカードを作るとなると大変な作業なので、計画を立てる必要がありす。

まず、すべて入れるためのバッグが必要ですから、事前に検討し、持って帰るためのバレンタインデーのバッグのデザインを開始。ボール紙からスタンプを作り、絵の具を加えて素敵なハートの形を作りました。うまくできましたよ。

ハートの形が渇く間に、次のステップは独自のバレンタイン・カードをデザインすることです。デザインを1つ作成するだけで、機械を使えば何度もコピーすることができます。私たちは数枚の紙を共有し、それぞれが自分だけのバレンタインのデザインを書き、名前を書きました。愛を込めて！

Then, it was off to the copiers!

I took the designs that the students made, gave them a special heart-patterned back, and copied them many times!　Just enough times to have enough cards for each of their friends in the class. I sliced up the papers to end up with a stack of hundreds of cards!

With that all done, it was time to hand them back to the students. They would move on to the next and most important step: personalizing the cards! One by one, they took the cards, wrote the name of each of their friends at the top, added a message and a little color, and then grabbed the next card!

Without using the copier and paper slicer, it would have taken a very long time. But with this efficiency, we were able to make enough Valentine’s cards to share with everyone in just about an hour! We were working like machines!

そして、コピー機へ向かいます。生徒たちが作ったデザインを特別なハート柄のバックに付けて、何度もコピーしました。クラスの友だちそれぞれに必要なカードを用意するのに十分な回数です。紙を切り、何百枚ものカードの山が出来上がりました。

すべてが終わると、生徒たちに返却。次に最も重要なステップ、つまりカードを自分自身のカードとしてカスタマイズするステップに進むことになります。1枚ずつカードを取り、一番上に友だちの名前を書き、メッセージと少しの色を追加して、次のカードを手に取ります。

コピー機とカッターを使わなかったら、非常に時間がかかっていたでしょう。しかしこの効率のおかげで、全員に共有するのに十分なバレンタイン・カードをわずか1時間ほどで作成することができました。生徒みんなはまるで機械のように作業していたのです。

It was fun to think about each of our friends as we made their card. Many students asked their friends for their favorite colors, or what they liked, so they could make their cards even more special. Mass-producing cards like this was a unique experience, but it definitely made us think like workers and designers!

Yes, alongside our various events in February, our topic is people at work, or jobs. Of course, there are many more jobs in the world than we can talk about in just a few weeks, but we can learn the names of many common ones, as well as dream about what we might want to try in the future.

カードを作りながら友だち1人ひとりのことを考えるのは楽しかったです。多くの生徒は、自分のカードをさらに特別なものにするために、友だちに好きな色や好きなものを尋ねました。このようなカードを大量生産するのはユニークな経験でしたが、間違いなく自分たちを働く人やデザイナーのように考えるようになります。

そうなんです、2月のさまざまなイベントと並んで、私たちのトピックは「職場の人々」、つまり仕事です。もちろん世界にはほんの数週間では語りきれないほどたくさんの仕事がありますが、私たちは多くの一般的な仕事の名前を学び、将来やってみたいことについて夢を見ることができます。

That’s how to work!

Working is hard, but rewarding. We talked about why people do jobs, and how it is different from work that students do. The main idea that came up was the “reward” part. Students are rewarded with knowledge. Adults are rewarded with money!

Let’s save the money thing for later. For now, we added classroom jobs for everyone to do, including a work schedule for February and a list of duties, too. Some students were nervous about having responsibilities, but many quickly took action and did their jobs very well! That’s how to work!

働くのは大変ですが、やりがいがあります。人はなぜ仕事をするのか、生徒の作業とどう違うのかについて話し合いました。思いついた主なアイデアは「報酬」の部分でした。生徒には知識という報酬が与えられます。大人にはお金が与えられる！

お金のことは後に取っておきましょう。現時点では、2月に全員が行える教室の作業の担当スケジュールや任務のリストなど追加しました。責任を負うことに緊張している生徒もいましたが、多くの生徒はすぐに行動を起こし、作業をとてもうまくやり遂げました。それが「働く」ということです！

Back to Valentine’s Day…

We had another special surprise in addition to the cards we were making: Valentine’s chocolate! Ms. Masami provided cute moulds to use to make our own chocolate pops! It was a fun activity to melt the chocolate and add it to the mould, like we were in a chocolate factory.

We worked together with the friends at our table. We made sure the moulds were only half-full, but also full enough to make the shape properly. We crushed cereal and added it to the chocolate to fill up extra space and give it some texture. We would have to wait until Friday to see the result, but our mouths were already watering 😝

作っていたカードの他に、もう一つ特別なサプライズがありました。それはバレンタイン・チョコレートです。Ms. Masamiが、オリジナルのChocolate Popsを作るために使うかわいい型を提供してくれたのです。チョコレートを溶かして型に流し込む作業は、まるでチョコレート工場にいるかのような楽しいアクティビティでした。

テーブルにいる友だちと協力しての作業です。型にちょうど半分、最終的にChocolate Popsになる十分な量のチョコがはいったことを確認。シリアルを砕いてチョコレートに加え、残りのスペースを埋め、食感を与えることに。うまくできたか結果を知るには金曜日まで待たなければなりませんでしたが、すでによだれが出てきました😝

Finally, Friday was here! Happy Valentine’s Day💖

We were excited from the morning because we had lots of things to do. Because it is a Friday, we had PE class, as well as literacy and library. However, the things that really made us excited was from our Valentine’s Day event!

In the morning, we snuck into the big room while everyone was having circle time, in small groups. We found everyone’s Valentine’s Day bags hanging at the back of the room. It was like Christmas! We put our cards into all of our friends’ bags. We could just imagine them opening the bags later to get so many cards!

ついに金曜日がやって来ました。ハッピーバレンタインデー💖 やることがたくさんあったので朝からワクワクしていました。この日は金曜日だったので、体育の授業のほか、読み書きや（週末に持って帰る）絵本の作業もありました。でも、一番盛り上がったのはバレンタインイベントです！

朝、みんながサークルタイムを楽しんでいる間に、少人数のグループでBig Room Classに忍び込みました。部屋にはみんなのバレンタインデーのバッグが。まるでクリスマスのようでした。私たちは友だち全員のバッグに1枚ずつカードを入れます。後で友だちが袋を開けて、とてもたくさんのカードを取り出す様子が想像できます。

And before lunch, our second surprise appeared: our chocolate that we had made yesterday was ready! We carefully pried the chocolate out of the moulds and held our breath. How did they look? Did they hold together? Yes! They look great!

We prepared small plastic bags and shiny twist ties, and wrapped up our chocolates just like you might find them in a store. They looked professional, and delicious too. We added them to our Valentine’s Day bags, and finally, they were complete.

I hope everyone enjoyed the celebration. We were busy, but the work was fun and rewarding. Everyone worked hard to make things for others, but in the end, everyone received a bag full of lovely cards and chocolate. If you can find a job where you can work hard and get a good feeling from it, you are in a good position!

そして昼食前に、2番目のサプライズ。昨日作ったチョコレートが完成したのです。チョコを慎重に型からとり出し、息を止めました。チョコはどうでしょうか？ チョコ固まっている？ Yes！見た目も素晴らしいです！

小さなビニール袋とキラキラのラッピング・タイを用意し、お店で売っているものと同じようにチョコを包みました。見た目もプロっぽくて美味しかったです。バレンタインのバッグにいれて、ようやく完成です。

みんながお祝いを楽しんだことを願っています。忙しかったですが、作業は楽しくてやりがいがありました。みんな一生懸命何かを作って、最後には素敵なカードとチョコがいっぱい入った袋を全員が受け取りました。一生懸命働けて、やりがいを感じられる仕事を見つけることができれば、あなたは良い立場にいます。
