今週からCHESは通常通りの活動に戻りました。年が明け、1月のTopic「vehicles and transportation」を学ぶなか、やはりみんなが気になるのは恒例のお餅つき。

幸いお天気にも恵まれ、楽しく元気いっぱいにお餅つきをすることができました。この勢いでCHESみんなで今年も楽しんでいきたいと思います。2025年もよろしくお願いいたします。

Welcome the New Year with Mochi

The first week back from holiday has been full of all sorts of interesting things. Our new topic of vehicles and transportation gave us a lot to think about.

We made airplanes that flew in the sky. We thought about what powers different vehicles, from fuel, to electricity, to people’s own power. We combined our voices to make a bus where people went up and down, wheels went around and round, and so on. We made roads that connected cities, and gears that connected wheels.

By the end of the week, we had already settled back into the usual school spirit. We were learning and using our brains every moment.

冬休が終了して最初の 1 週間は、あらゆる種類の興味深い出来事でいっぱいでした。乗り物と交通手段という新しいトピックは、多くのことを考えさせてくれました。

空を飛ぶ飛行機を作りました。また燃料から電気、そして人々自身の力に至るまで、さまざまな乗り物に動力を供給するものについて考えました。そしてみんなで声を合わせて、人が上がったり下がったり、車輪がぐるぐる回ったりするバスを作りました。都市と都市を繋ぐ道を作り、車輪を繋ぐ歯車も作りました。

週末までに、すでにいつもの学校の雰囲気に戻っていました。どの瞬間も学び、どの瞬間も頭を使っていました。

And because it was the end of the week, it was time for mochi pounding! Finally, the long-awaited mochi pounding day has come! Throughout the week, we were also always thinking about mochi, and asking questions every day.

To prepare, we made sure we knew what mochi pounding was all about. We talked about how it is traditional and done to provide food during the cold months. We watched a video on very fast mochi pounding! We practiced our own mochi pounding in CHES park too.

When the time came for us to step out into the cold air and pound some real mochi, we were ready!

そして週末には餅つきの時間です。いよいよ待ちに待った餅つきの日がやってきたのです。一週間ずっと餅のことを考え、毎日質問していました。

準備のために、餅つきとは何なのかを確認。寒い季節に食べ物を提供することがどのように伝統的で行われているかについて話し合いました。とても速い餅つきのビデオを見て、 CHES Parkで自分たちでも餅つきの練習をしました。

寒い空気の中に出て、本物のお餅をつきます。準備は完了です。

We were excited to see the White Owl parents come to help. Just as we practiced, we held the hammer with two hands, one tightly held under the head to stop it from swaying, and one near the bottom to balance the weight.

We cheered and shouted along with our friends to give them power. “Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi!” In no time at all, the rice we had poured into the bowl had all stuck together. We had mochi!

The next step was to hurry over to the tables and form the mochi into balls before it hardened. It was sticky, but we used white flour to keep it from sticking to the tables and our hands. However, this made a big mess! We needed to be careful where the flour ended up. Sometimes, it was our noses💦

White Owl の保護者の方が手伝いに来てくれたのを見て嬉しくなりました。練習と同じように、ハンマー（杵）を両手で持ち、片方の手は揺れを防ぐために頭の下でしっかりと握り、もう片方の手は重さのバランスを取るために（臼）底近くに置きました。

友だちと一緒に応援したり叫んだりしてパワーをもらいました。 「わっしょい！わっしょい！わっしょい！」あっという間に臼に注いだもち米はくっついてしまいました。お餅になったのです。

次のステップは、急いでテーブルに行き、餅が固まる前に丸めることでした。ベタベタしていましたが、テーブルや手にくっつかないように白い餅とり粉を使いました。ところが、これが大混乱を招いてしまったのです！餅とり粉がどこに行きのかを注意する必要がありました。場合によっては、それが私たちの鼻だったということもあります💦

When our hard work was done, we had many bags of mochi that we were happy to share with our friends, teachers, parents, and even neighbors. It was rewarding to make a food like this from scratch.

With the mochi pounding event finally finished, we can enjoy a long weekend. Please take the time to enjoy the mochi, and make a wish for the coming year.

一生懸命餅つきをして、たくさんのお餅ができて、友だち、先生、両親、さらには近所の人たちにも喜んで分け合いました。こういう食べ物を一から作るのはやりがいがありました。

餅つき大会もようやく終わり、楽しい連休が過ごせそうです。新年の願いを込めて、ぜひお餅を召し上がってください。

Mochi, Washoi!

Yellow Kangaroo Class

For today, we have a special activity and this is a traditional one for Japanese people. It is called “Mochi Pounding”, it is a special occasion for New Year. It brings good luck for the whole year.

We have different things needed such as Kine and Usu. First, we practice pounding Mochi in our classroom. Then we tried to carry and pound. It was very heavy! Teachers helped and everyone rolled mochi into a sphere shape or circle shape.

We can share at home and let’s be careful because it is sticky and chewy. Please look after the smaller kids and give little by little only. Please enjoy!

We are thankful to WO moms and dad. We did it properly.

今日は特別なアクティビティがあります。「餅つき」と呼ばれるもので、新年の特別な行事です。一年の幸運を祈る行事です。

杵やうすなど、必要なものはさまざま。まずは教室で餅つきの練習。杵を持ち、餅をついてみました。とても重かったです！先生たちも手伝って、みんなでお餅を丸めたり、丸めたりしました。

お家でもおすそ分けしてあげてください。もちもちしているので、気をつけて食べてください。小さいお子さんには、少しづつあげてくださいね。どうぞお楽しみに！
